PROFILE OF THE DAM SOCIETY

Convergence or interdependence of developmental activities has become keyword at all levels including international level to evolve strategies for efficient management of available resources. For best management and use of our vulnerable resources essential to sustain life, contribute to over all development and to preserve environment, there is need to have a holistic view of the development.

Water Resources development by constructing dams-small, medium and large, is one of the areas of such activity. For this purpose a society titled 'The Dams Society' has been established and registered with the Registrar of Societies, Delhi, in September 2001.

The Major Objectives of the DAMS SOCIETY are
Promotion of the concept of design and construction of all types and heights of dams to give impetus to the use and development of environment friendly, socially compatible and financially viable water resource projects.
Upgradation of the science of dam engineering, construction, operation, maintenance and safety.
Promoting public awareness of the role of dams in the beneficial and sustainable development of the nation's water resources.
To act as facilitator for the public and private sector companies, government departments and other governmental and non-governmental agencies to work together for a long range objective in all aspects of planning, development, use of efficient and cost effective technologies and development of necessary facilities.
To act as facilitator for development and use of water resources not only for hydel power but also to include irrigation, navigation, pisiculture, agriculture etc. and allied technologies and to establish an effective network amongst the users and allied equipment manufacturers, consultants, financiers and legislative consultants and other industries, technical and educational institutions and other organization (domestic and international) for exchange of ideas, collection and dissemination of information on all aspects of design, construction and utilization for the general benefit of all concerned.
To facilitate development of institutions/facilities for imparting training in all aspects of dams including planning, designing, construction and commissioning of dams and allied subjects like flood control, irrigation, pisiculture, drinking water, navigation, hydro power etc.
To undertake and promote studies and research projects for improvements and upgradation of dams with a view to helping various organizations and consumers to optimize the utilization of the existing facilities.
To promote clean technologies, undertake environmental impact assessment of the projects and provide technical assistance for maximizing utilization the same in the design and construction of dams.
To conceptualize plan and promote development and utilization of dams and allied subject.
To promote and facilitate taking up of research and consultancy projects.
To promote an effective domestic and international out-reach by establishing contacts and bilateral relations with professional bodies, financial institutions, multilateral organizations like UNEP, ESCAP, UNDP, UNIDO, the World Bank, ADB, OECF, AIDAB/ AUSTRADE, US AID, ICOLD, IHA, ICID etc.
To establish support, maintain, acquire, run and to grant aid and other financial assistance to schools, colleges, social and educational libraries, reading rooms, hostels boarding houses and other institutions for the use of students and also for general development and advancement of education and diffusion of knowledge amongst the public related to dams and allied subject.
To sponsor advance studies and applied research & development works in various fields of dams and allied technologies.


The Society will function under the Umbrealla of Council of Power Utilities

Membership : All professionals/experts and persons who have attained 21 years of age interested in consultancy, financing, legislation, construction and utilization of dams, water resources, power, materials, navigation, environmental aspects and allied subjects like law, finance and have subscribed to the aim and objectives of the society subject to the approval of the Governing Council/Committee nominated out of Founder Members by the Governing Council will be entitled to be its Founder, Honorary, Life-Fellow, Members and Associates on payment of their subscription herein-in-after provided.
Membership Fee:

Life Member: A person or body corporate/institute whom the Governing Council/Committee nominates/ thinks fit to become the Life Member of the Society on subscribing Rs. 5,000 in case of individual and Rs. 50,000 for a body corporate/institutions.

Patron Members: National and Multinational organizations and individuals of national repute will be eligible for becoming Patron Members of the Society on payment of Rs. 5 lakhs or equivalent in case of organizations and Rs. 10,000 in case of individuals.

Organizational Members: The Organizational Membership is open to any National & Multinational Organizations which are connected with dams, water resources, energy generation, transmission, distribution, financing, manufacture, communications, power electronics, transport, gas, oil, non-conventional energy sources, drinking water etc. This membership is limited to organizations, institutions etc. and would facilitate the transfer or rights of the members to any two officers representing that organizations during the period of their validity of membership. The annual membership subscription would be Rs. 25,000/-

General Member: Those individuals, who shall pay an yearly subscription of Rs. 5000 per year, shall be admitted as an ordinary member of the Society


OFFICE BEARERS

The office bearers shall comprise President, Secretary General, Treasurer, Committee Chairman, Regional Chairman, any other position as may be decided by the Governing Council.

Governing Council

Governing Council shall be composed and constituted amongst the members of the Society.
